A Look At 2 Common High Blood Pressure Medications
More than 65 million Americans are now suffering from high blood pressure and many thousands of sufferers are taking one of two common classes of high blood pressure medications - ACE inhibitors and AT-2 receptor blockers. Both of these medications work in a similar manner to block the production of a hormone which causes our blood vessels to contract. By blocking this hormone our blood vessels remain more relaxed and thus our blood pressure is reduced. But which of these two medications works best?
Well, according to a recent study there is no real difference at all in terms of their ability to control high blood pressure and there is no reason to choose one over the other in the case of most patients. This said, one thing we still don’t really know is what the longer-term effects of these medications will be in terms of such things as reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack or death and so I guess we would have to say that the jury is really still out.
