tips on making rabbit cages
When you are making your own wire rabbit cages, don’t skimp on materials. Buy the best wire you can afford. rabbit cages should be made of 14 gauge galvanized wire. You can find wire that has been galvanized before welding and wire that has been galvanized after welding. If you can afford it, go for the after welding wire. It will last the longest. You may also find vinyl coated wire. Skip this. Rabbits tend to chew on the vinyl, creating rough spots that can catch fur, feces and urine and make your cage a mess that is difficult to clean.
Floor wire should be in a ½ inch by 1 inch grid pattern. This is large enough to allow the droppings to fall out of the cage while offering enough support for their feet. Walls can be done in 1 inch by 2 inch wire. This size allows easy spacing for water bottles and feeders, yet keeps your rabbits safe from predators. If you are going to be raising litters, you may want to put babysaver wire on your doe’s cage. This wire is 1 inch by 2 inches for the most part, with a closer spacing of the wire grid towards the bottom to keep little kits from squeezing out.
