does the university of north texas have akas?

The university of north texas is one of the colleges i am looking to go to…i was wondering did they have akas? [alpha kappa alpha sorority] and if so, how strong are they? also, is the school racist and how are they toward african americans like is there any discrimination? and also is denton, texas racist? any info about this school really would help. thank you

Hello! I am an advisor to the UNT chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha - Epsilon Mu; therefore, I think I can give you direct feedback. The AKAs are an extremely strong chapter who have consistently high GPAs and have won Greek woman of the year many times; in addition, these members have upheld high scholastic standards by winning the highest gpas among any greeks - black, white, Hispanic or Asian — this year and years previously.

The ‘Electrifying Epsilon Mu’ Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has several service opportunities and social activities. Service is extremely important!!!

I’ve worked here for almost 4 years and I don’t think that the campus is racist. Texas does have some pockets of racist (as that is to be expected being in the southwest), but I don’t experience it daily or even often. I am from Texas and lived in the Tyler area . . . now, that is where there is rampant racism (FROM MY PERSPECTIVE). I pray that I never have to live there again! I believe that you will enjoy Denton. Please, never allow fear to prevent you from moving forward. As a person who has formally allowed her fears to control her, I can tell you — life is not lived when fear controls it.

If you have any additional questions about UNT, please email me personally.

Sincerest regards,
Sweetpea

Hi Olivia, to answer your question yes UNT does have an active undergrad chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha,Epsilon Mu is the chapter name. If you go to unt.edu and go to campus life link it will direct you to the homepage of student organizations or Greek life from there it will provide a link to that particular chapter’s website. They are pretty active when it comes to students activities and community service..as are the other NPHC organizations up there. As far as UNT being a raciest campus……from my experience the campus is becoming more diverse, and the African American population has increased throughout the years. It’s ignorance where ever you go but I never heard of any incidents down there that was racially motivated if that answers your question. Also Alpha Kappa Alpha ’s national website, http://www.aka1908.org can provide information concerning that particular chapter as well. Best wishes in your pursuits!

Ms. Loving, thank you for your clarification. I understood what you were saying, what I was trying to say was that I don’t copy from anyone else’s comments, the only time I copy anything is when I’m listing information from the national website,Alpha Kappa Alpha that is :) If I did word something that was simular to someone else’s saying it was not by purpose. But I’ll be sure next time to make sure my comments doesn’t appear to be a duplicate of another answer….thanks for pointing that out to me.
    Stay Blessed!

Ms. Sweetpea, could I email you privately concerning UNT?

  3. Blessed and Highly Favored. I received your message on another Yahoo answer and I was not referring to you copying information from the national website for AKA. I was referring to you copying other Yahoo Answers user comments and taking them as your own. I attempted to send you this message privately but you do not accept email.

  4. Yes. University of North Texas does have a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Please use this link to view the homepage for the chapter http://orgs.unt.edu/aka/. My mother graduated from college in Denton and she loved it (she went to Texas Woman’s University which is also in Denton), and did not experience much discrimination and this was in the 1960s when such treatment was even more prevalent. I visited the town myself it is was very nice to be a small town. Good luck with your pursuits.
