Can anyone tell me the political element of the story Rip Van Winkle by Irving?
Apparently, it has a political element and I have not seen any and I’ve read the whole text. Can anyone help?
"He immediately gets into trouble when he hails himself a loyal subject of King George III, not knowing that in the meantime the American Revolution has taken place."
good old rip fell asleep before the revolution. he was apathetic to king george before and awoke after the revolution to be apathetic to the republican elected government after. he represents many of the ‘average man’ that is not taken up by politics, but in our society must wake up to play a role. Shaking the apathy is not easy, but if we remain a nation of apathetic citizens sleeping through our citizen duties, then things will not change and benefit everyman for the better. this at least is how i interpret it.
