A question for anybody who has read any books by John Irving?

Who else thinks that John Irving is too underrated? I would expect him to be more known.

I couldn’t agree more. John Irving is one of the great writers of our time–perhaps the greatest. A Prayer for Owen Meany is a masterpiece.

  1. I’ve always perceived John Irving to be a highly respected and well-known author–especially as many of his books have been turned into films.

Did he write a book called Cider House something? That was a great book, if he did!

Cider House Rules, that’s it. Abortions.

  5. I worked at Borders for six years. He is on the shelves but not promoted enough. Cider House Rules is brilliant. I always put his books on the front table, and they sold really well. He IS under-rated, so we just have to work hard at really pushing him in UK. I have been to Barnes and Noble in New York, and they sell his novels by the bucketload.

  6. I think he is rated about right. I have only read Garp and I sort of enjoyed it, but was counting the pages a little in a number of chapters.

If you want to be a well known author you don’t write literature you write thrillers.
