Governmental Roles in Food Safety Laws
The role of governments in implementing food safety legislation to ensure organisations within the food chain have an adequate food safety management system is ever increasing. Implementation is necessary to maintain confidence in internationally traded food and provide food hygiene education programmes which effectively communicate the principles of food hygiene to industry and consumers. All organisations in the food chain should be required to apply applicable basic hygienic practices to provide food which is safe and suitable for consumption.
In deciding whether a requirement is necessary or appropriate, an assessment of the risk should be made using a HACCP approach to implementing a food safety management system.
