Physicians Miss Infant’s Group B Strep Infection

The following is from a reported case regarding Group B Strep As the report demonstrates sometimes having several physicians ends up in errors as opposed to the consensus on diagnosis and proper treatment. First, the obstetrician who delivered the baby did not take any action despite the fact that the infant demonstrated symptoms consistent with a Group B Strep infection.

The obstetrician then ordered that the child be taken to the nursery. At no time, however, did the obstrician document or report any of the symptoms consistent with GBS. To compound the problem, the pediatrician who made rounds at the nursery likewise failed to take any action even though the baby was in respiratory distress.
