How Medical Payments Coverage Works

There are many different types of coverage included in American Auto Insurance. Some are required and others are optional. Medical expense coverage is normally an optional coverage. Typically Insurance Companies must offer this coverage to you, but you do not have to buy it. Medical Payments coverage pays for medical or funeral expenses for you or others injured or killed in an accident while riding or driving in your vehicle.

This coverage includes all reasonable medical costs including hospital, surgical, chiropractic, x-ray, dental, professional nursing, prosthetic, and rehabilitation expenses up to the limits of
the coverage. Medical payments coverage normally covers only those expenses not covered by regular health insurance, such as co-payments and deductibles. It will also cover you or members of your immediate family if you are hit by a car while walking or riding in another vehicle.

This coverage will cover the costs of your medical and funeral expenses even if you cause the accident. Usually, only expenses incurred within one year of the accident are covered. For
example, this type of coverage will provide benefits for a friend, or a neighbor’s child injured while in your car.
